AEO and AI search

AEO vs SEO vs GEO: what is the difference?

IN SHORT

SEO earns a position in a list of search results. AEO aims to get you named inside the single answer an AI assistant writes. GEO, generative engine optimization, is a newer name for much the same goal. The groundwork overlaps heavily, so treat them as one program with different outcomes measured.

  • SEO is judged in rankings, clicks and enquiries. AEO and GEO are judged in whether you are named or cited.
  • The terms are not standardized: Microsoft’s retail guide reads AEO as "agentic" engine optimization, while most others read it as "answer".
  • Google says that, from its perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, which it considers SEO.
  • If your site is weak, fix SEO foundations first.

One foundation, two goals

Most of the groundwork helps both, so good SEO gives AEO a head start. We still sell them as separate services, because the goal, the work on top and the way we measure are different.

  • Clear positioning
  • Answer-first content
  • Structured data
  • Trusted profiles
  • A fast, crawlable site

Three terms, one set of goals

answer engine optimization and generative engine optimization describe optimizing for AI-generated answers. The second term was popularized by a 2023 academic paper, GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, accepted to the KDD 2024 conference. In practice the two are used almost interchangeably.

SEO is the older discipline of earning visibility in search results. Today it also covers features such as AI Overviews, which draw on the same indexed pages.

Nobody owns these labels. In January 2026 Microsoft Advertising published a guide for retailers that reads AEO as "agentic engine optimization" (clarity through real-time product data) and GEO as building credibility so AI systems recommend you, according to Search Engine Journal’s breakdown. Another vendor will use the same letters differently. Ask what outcome is being sold, not which acronym.

What Google says about the labels

Google’s generative AI optimization guide (last updated July 2026) says AEO and GEO describe optimizing for the search experience, which Google considers SEO. It advises checking third-party AEO and GEO advice against its guidance on third-party SEO advice.

It also says generative features in Google Search rely on its core ranking and quality systems, using retrieval and query fan-out, and that foundational SEO practices still apply. See AI Overviews and AI Mode for how those features work.

That is Google describing Google. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot and others run their own retrieval, with their own crawlers. So we keep AEO as a distinct line of work even though most of the groundwork is shared.

What they share

  • A site that can be crawled and indexed.
  • Content that answers a real question clearly.
  • Structured data and consistent facts, covered in schema markup for AI.
  • Evidence of experience, expertise and trust, often summarized as E-E-A-T.

Where they differ

  • Where you appear: a link in a list, or a name inside one answer.
  • What wins: a page that ranks, or a passage an assistant can quote.
  • How it is measured: positions and clicks, or share of answers.
  • How content is written: around a keyword and a click, or around the questions behind a question.
  • What counts as a signal: links and relevance for SEO, and also being mentioned and described consistently across the web for AEO, as covered in brand, entity and mentions.

What the evidence says about GEO tactics

The GEO paper tested nine content edits on a benchmark of queries and compared them with unedited pages. Adding quotations, adding statistics and citing sources gave the largest gains, and the authors report improvements of up to 40 percent in visibility within generated answers. Stuffing keywords, the classic SEO tactic, performed worse than doing nothing.

The paper also found that results varied by topic, and that lower-ranked sources gained more than top-ranked ones from the same edits. The authors say they did not test effects on search rankings, and the main experiments used a single model as the answer engine. Use it as a hint about what makes content quotable, not as a forecast.

Google’s guide warns against the opposite error: chasing hacks. It says you do not need an llms.txt file, content chunking or a special writing style for Google’s AI features. The two views agree on one thing: specific, well-sourced writing beats padding.

Which should you do first?

If your technical foundation or core pages are weak, start with SEO, because assistants cannot cite pages they cannot reach. A good test: are your key pages indexed, fast and written to answer one question each? If not, fix that first.

If those are sound, add the AEO layer: question mapping, answer-first rewrites, entity consistency and measurement. Most of that work is editorial, and it improves pages for human readers as well.

We sell them as separate services because the goal and the way we measure are different, but we build one foundation under both.

How to tell which one is working

Keep two separate reports. For SEO: impressions, clicks, rankings for target pages and enquiries from organic search, from Google Search Console and your analytics. For AEO: the share of runs on a fixed set of buyer questions in which you are named or cited, tracked monthly. Details are in measuring AI visibility.

A rise in one does not prove a rise in the other. A page can rank well and still be skipped in an answer, or be cited without being the top result. Reporting both side by side is what stops the two disciplines from being confused.

Examples by industry

Illustrative scenarios, not client results. Pick the one closest to your business.

  • LAW FIRMS

A personal injury firm already on page one for its main city keyword. Traffic is steady, but prospects now ask assistants, "What should I do after a car accident and who should I call?"

    1. Keep the SEO foundation exactly as it is.
    2. Add answer-first guides on the steps after an accident, each linking to the service page.
    3. Track whether the firm is named across a fixed set of accident questions each month.

Takeaway: Strong SEO is the base. The AEO layer targets the questions that come before hiring.

  • TRADES, CONTRACTORS AND HOME SERVICES

An electrician with a new site and weak foundations. The site is slow, key pages are thin and half the service pages are not indexed. The owner wants "to show up in ChatGPT".

    1. Fix indexing, speed and the service pages first, which is SEO work.
    2. Then add clear answers on cost, timing and emergency call-outs.
    3. Only then start measuring AI answers.

Takeaway: If assistants cannot reach good pages, AEO has nothing to work with.

  • E-COMMERCE BRANDS

A store that sells organic bedding. Product pages rank, but assistants recommend competitors for "best organic cotton sheets".

    1. Add comparison and care-guide content that answers the buyer’s questions.
    2. Add Product schema and genuine, visible reviews.
    3. Keep product feed data accurate for price and availability.
    4. Track how often the store is named for a fixed set of product questions.

Takeaway: Ranking in a list and being recommended in an answer are different outcomes, and both can be improved.

Plumb: how we do it

The shared technical foundation sits under both SEO and AEO.

  • Crawlable, indexable pages
  • Clean structure and internal links
  • Structured data and consistent entity facts
See all six steps

Common mistakes

  • Buying AEO while the site cannot be crawled properly, which pays for work no assistant can see.
  • Dropping SEO because assistants exist. Google says its AI features rely on its core ranking systems, so weak SEO weakens both.
  • Using the terms to sell the same work twice, so you pay two invoices for one deliverable.
  • Expecting AI answers to behave like a ranking list. They vary from run to run and have no fixed position one.
  • Copying GEO tactics from a lab paper without testing them on your own questions.
  • Taking a vendor’s definition of AEO or GEO at face value without asking what outcome and report you will receive.

Checklist

  • Your key pages are indexed and fast.
  • Each money page has a clear, answer-first opening.
  • Your schema and business facts are consistent.
  • You can name the outcome each service you buy is supposed to change.
  • You track both rankings and AI answers in separate reports.
  • Claims on key pages carry a number, a quotation or a named source.

Questions

Do I need both SEO and AEO?

For most businesses, yes, because they share a foundation and reinforce each other. The order depends on your site: fix the SEO foundation first if it is weak, then add AEO. If your pages are already indexed and answer buyer questions, the AEO layer is mostly question mapping, rewriting openings and measurement. A business with no organic presence should not buy AEO first. Budget matters too: if you can only fund one thing this quarter, fund the foundation that your best buyer questions depend on, and add measurement of AI answers once those pages are solid.

Is GEO different from AEO?

In practice, no. They are two names for optimizing to be included in AI-generated answers, and we treat them as one service. Some vendors split them, for example Microsoft’s retail guide separates clarity from credibility, so ask what each deliverable is. Do not pay twice for the same work under two labels. The research that coined the term GEO tested content edits such as adding statistics and quotations, which is useful input to how we write pages, but it is a method inside the work, not a separate service.

Is AEO just SEO with a new name?

Partly. Google says optimizing for its generative features is SEO from its perspective, and most of the groundwork is the same. What differs is the outcome you track, being named inside an answer, and the surfaces beyond Google where buyers ask questions. That is enough difference to measure separately, but not enough to justify a completely separate site or strategy. A good test is the report. If a provider’s AEO report is just your rankings under a new heading, you are paying for a label. A real one shows named and cited rates on a fixed prompt set.

Which is cheaper to start with?

SEO foundations are the cheaper first step if your site is weak, because they unlock everything else. AEO adds work on question mapping, rewrites and measurement. We do not quote prices in guides, because scope depends on your site and your market. A short audit shows which layer needs attention first and what each would involve. Ask any provider what you will receive each month, how it is measured and what is excluded, so you can compare offers on the same basis rather than on the acronym.

How long before I see results from either?

Both take months. Google notes that recrawling after a change can take from several days to several months, and AI answers vary run to run, so a trend needs several monthly measurements. We recommend six months as a sensible engagement, with monthly reporting, and we guarantee no ranking or citation in that time. SEO changes usually show in impressions and rankings first, with enquiries following. AEO changes show first in whether a new page is used as a source, then in how often you are named.

Does a local business need AEO?

Often yes, because local questions are specific, such as "best emergency plumber in Leeds". An assistant must pick a few businesses to name. Google’s guide points local businesses to keep Google Business Profile details accurate, and the same consistent facts help other assistants. Start with five local questions and see who is named today. Keep your name, address, phone number and opening hours identical on your site, Business Profile and directories, and add a page for each service and each area you cover.
