What is llms.txt?

It is a plain Markdown file at the root of a website, at yoursite.com/llms.txt, that lists your most useful pages with a short note on each. The idea, proposed in 2024, is to give AI systems a clean map of the site. It is a proposal, not an internet standard.

Do I need one to show up in ChatGPT or Google AI answers?

No. Google says no special files or markup are needed for its AI features, and we have found no proof that assistants cite sites more often because they publish one. Treat it as low-cost housekeeping. Crawler access, clear answer pages and mentions on trusted sources matter far more, and the free audit checks those.

What goes in the file?

A heading with your name, a one-line summary, then short sections of links with a sentence about each page. Put your main service, pricing, about and contact pages first. Leave out thank-you pages, tag archives and anything you would not want quoted.

Where do I put it?

At the very root, so it loads at yoursite.com/llms.txt. On WordPress that means uploading it to the site root through your host’s file manager or SFTP. Some platforms do not let you host files at the root. If yours does not, ask your developer for a redirect or skip it.

Does this tool use AI or store my site?

No to both. It reads your public homepage and sitemap with an ordinary request, builds the list in your browser and keeps nothing after you leave the page.
