Answer engine optimization: the complete guide
IN SHORT
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your business easy for AI assistants and answer engines to find, understand and recommend, so you are named or cited when buyers ask questions. This guide explains the concepts and the six-step method we use to do it.
OUR APPROACH

THE CONCEPTS
Every concept, in detail
What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) makes your business easy for AI assistants to find, understand and recommend. What it is, how it works and where to start.
Read the guideAEO vs SEO vs GEO: what is the difference?
SEO earns a position in results. AEO and GEO aim to get you named inside an AI answer. How the three differ, what they share and which to do first.
Read the guideHow do AI assistants choose which sources to cite?
AI assistants retrieve pages that match the question and quote the clearest, best-evidenced passages. What is documented, what is unknown and how to be chosen.
Read the guideWhat is query fan-out, and why does it matter for AEO?
Query fan-out is when an AI system splits one question into several searches. How it works, why it changes content planning, and how to map the sub-questions.
Read the guideWhat is llms.txt, and do you need one?
llms.txt is a proposed Markdown file that points AI models to your best pages. What it holds, what Google says, what the data shows and whether to publish one.
Read the guideSchema markup for AEO: what to add and why
Schema markup labels what a page is about so machines read it without guessing. What Google says about AI features, which types to use and what to avoid.
Read the guideHow to measure your visibility in AI answers
Measure AI visibility with a fixed prompt set, repeated runs and share of answers, tied to referrals and enquiries. The method, the data sources and the limits.

Learn which AI crawlers to allow in robots.txt, from OAI-SearchBot to ClaudeBot and Google-Extended, what each one does, and how to check that it works.

Questions
What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your business easy for AI assistants and answer engines to find, understand and recommend, so you are named or cited when buyers ask questions. It covers positioning, answer-first content, technical access, proof and measurement. Google says its own generative AI features rely on core Search systems and that optimizing for them is, from its perspective, SEO. We treat AEO as an extension of SEO with a different outcome to track. It also means a plain-language summary of what you offer is easier for anyone to quote.
What is the Webtec Answer Method?
It is the six-step approach we use for AEO: Position, Map, Answer, Prove, Plumb and Panel. We decide who you serve and why you win, map the questions behind buyer questions, write answer-first pages, add proof, fix the technical foundation and measure the results every month. Each step has its own guide in this section, so you can apply any of them yourself. It is our method, not an industry standard. Start with Position and Map, which cost little and shape everything that follows, and leave Plumb and Panel until the pages are worth measuring.
How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO earns a position in a list of results. AEO aims to get you named inside the single answer an assistant writes. They share most of their groundwork: crawlable pages, clear content and trust. What differs is the outcome you track, being named or cited rather than ranked, and the assistants beyond Google where buyers ask questions. We treat them as separate services on one foundation, and report them separately. Both are descriptions of the outcome you track, and the same pages usually serve both.
Can you guarantee citations from ChatGPT or Perplexity?
No, and nobody can. Assistants do not publish how they choose sources, and they change. Research also shows answers vary from run to run: a 2026 SparkToro study found the same brand list came back in under 1 percent of repeated runs. We improve everything you control, make sure the right crawlers can reach your pages, and measure whether you are named across repeated runs, tied to enquiries. Be wary of any report that shows a single answer as proof, since one run proves nothing.
Where should a business start with AEO?
Start with the commercial questions your buyers ask right before they decide, and write down 10 to 20 of them in their own words. Check whether your site answers each one clearly in the first paragraph, make sure AI crawlers are not blocked, and measure a fixed set of those questions each month. Fix indexing and thin pages first if your SEO foundation is weak. Write the questions in your buyers’ words, not your industry’s, and include cost and comparison questions.
Do I need llms.txt or special schema for AEO?
Not for Google. Its documentation says there is no special schema to add and that Search ignores llms.txt, and no major assistant has confirmed using llms.txt as a signal. Both are harmless when accurate, and schema helps machines read your pages. They are small parts of the plumbing, not substitutes for clear answers and crawl access. Keep your effort proportional: they are worth doing when they are cheap, and worth skipping when they distract from answering buyer questions. Fix crawl access and page clarity first.
