THREE STUDIES, THREE NUMBERS

One question, answered three ways.

Share of searches (or keywords) that show an AI Overview, by who measured it.

Overall prevalence, by study

The studies bracket the truth between about 16% and 25%, depending on method.

  • Conductor: share of US searches (Sept to Oct 2025)25.11%
  • Pew: share of searches by 900 US adults (March 2025)18%
  • Semrush: share of 10M+ keywords (Nov 2025)15.69%

WHY THEY DIFFER

Different haystacks.

Conductor counts searches in its index (21.9M US searches, four weeks).[1] Pew counts what 900 real people searched in a month, including everyday queries.[2] Semrush counts the share of 10M+ tracked keywords, which skew to keywords marketers care about.[3]

Within each study, comparisons between industries and over time are reliable. Across studies, compare direction, not decimals.

BY INDUSTRY

Health Care is in a class of its own.

Conductor, US searches, Sept 15 to Oct 12, 2025. All industries: 25.11%. Industries without a published figure show as gaps.

Share of searches showing an AI Overview

Health Care is about twice the average and eleven times Real Estate.

THE REAL DRIVER

It is not the industry. It is the question.

Pew measured what share of searches produced an AI summary, by the kind of query.

AI summaries by query type

Long, question-style searches trigger summaries far more often than short ones.

  • Starts with a question word (who, what, when, why)60%
  • Searches of 10 or more words53%
  • Full sentences (a noun and a verb)36%
  • One- or two-word searches8%

WHAT IT MEANS

Industries with more questions see more AI.

Ahrefs reports that 99.2% of keywords that trigger an AI Overview are informational.[5] Seer’s click studies are limited to informational and educational queries for the same reason.[6]

Health, finance and technology are question-heavy, so they top the industry list. Real estate searches are mostly transactional or local, so they sit near the bottom. Your own mix of questions matters more than your industry label.

What to do with it: Google says nothing special is needed to appear in AI Overviews beyond being indexed and publishing helpful content.[7] Use the industry numbers to judge how exposed your searches are, then measure your own. See what AI answers do to clicks and AEO by industry.

OUR INTERPRETATION

What we make of the numbers.

The figures above are the studies’. This part is our reading of them, kept separate so you can disagree.

Webtec Research

Our interpretation

  • Kris GjorgjioskiKris GjorgjioskiKeyword research and benchmarks
  • Hristijan NajcheskiHristijan NajcheskiTechnical SEO, data checks
  • Figures: the cited studies
  • Reading: ours

The figures on this page come from the cited studies. This reading of them is ours, and you may weigh it differently.

The spread between industries is wider than the spread between studies, which is the point worth taking away. Health Care sits near half of all searches, while real estate sits in single digits. A strategy built on the all-industry average would be wrong for both.

Exposure follows the shape of the question. Industries where people ask what, why and how, such as health, finance and utilities, are answered in place most often. Industries where people search for a place, a product or a provider are answered least. That is also why local and shopping businesses see AI Overviews mostly on their research-stage searches.

Because the readings move from quarter to quarter, this page is refreshed every quarter and shows the date next to each figure.

  • Look up your industry’s exposure before choosing where to invest
  • Expect informational pages to lose clicks first
  • Re-check the figures each quarter, they move
