GLOSSARY

What is Responsive design?

DEFINITION

Responsive design means a page rearranges itself to fit the screen it is shown on, so the same site works on a phone, a tablet and a wide monitor. Columns stack, menus collapse into a button and text resizes, instead of the visitor pinching and zooming.

It is done with flexible layouts rather than separate mobile sites. Looks fine on your laptop is not proof it works: images, tables, pop-ups and long headings often break only at phone widths, so it has to be checked on actual small screens. Why it matters: Many visitors arrive on a phone, and a layout that breaks there loses enquiries and weakens how your pages perform in search.
