GLOSSARY

What is Above the fold?

DEFINITION

Above the fold is the part of a page visible as soon as it loads, before the visitor scrolls. The phrase comes from newspapers, where the top half of the front page showed when folded.

There is no single fold on the web, because it moves with screen size: a phone shows much less than a desktop. What sits there, usually your headline, a short explanation and the main button, is what visitors use to decide whether to stay. It also tends to contain the largest element that loads, which affects your Largest Contentful Paint score. Why it matters: Visitors judge a page in seconds, so the first screen has to say what you do and what to do next.
