GLOSSARY

What is Meta title?

DEFINITION

The meta title, also called the title tag, is the headline of a page as search engines see it. It is the large clickable line in a search result and the text shown on the browser tab.

It is separate from the heading visitors see on the page itself, although they can be similar. Write it for people: say plainly what the page is about, put the most important words early and keep it short enough to avoid being cut off. Google may rewrite titles it thinks do not describe the page well, so a vague or stuffed title is often replaced. Why it matters: It is your first impression in search results, and a clear one earns more clicks from the same ranking.
