GLOSSARY

What is canonical URL?

DEFINITION

A canonical URL is the preferred address of a page that exists at several addresses. It tells search engines which version to show and to credit with links.

Google treats redirects and the rel="canonical" annotation as strong signals and a sitemap entry as a weak one. It recommends a self-referencing canonical on the preferred page and absolute URLs.
