GLOSSARY

What is noindex?

DEFINITION

Noindex is an instruction, set in a meta tag or HTTP header, that tells search engines to leave a page out of their index. It is the right way to keep a page out of results.

Google must be able to crawl a page to see its noindex rule, so blocking the page in robots.txt prevents it working. Noindex inside robots.txt is not supported by Google.
