GLOSSARY

What is UTM parameter?

DEFINITION

A UTM parameter is a small tag added to the end of a link, such as utm_source=newsletter, that tells your analytics where a visit came from. The common ones are source, medium and campaign.

They are how you separate traffic from a specific email, advert or social post in GA4. They need consistent spelling, because newsletter and Newsletter are reported as different sources. Do not put UTM links on internal links within your own site, since that resets the visit's source and distorts your reports. Why it matters: Without tags, much of your campaign traffic is lumped together as direct or unknown, and you cannot tell what is working.
