GLOSSARY

What is Uptime?

DEFINITION

Uptime is the share of time your website is reachable and working, usually shown as a percentage over a month or year. A figure like 99.9 percent still allows roughly 43 minutes of downtime in a 30-day month, so the extra nines matter.

Hosts often advertise an uptime figure, but a promise from a host is not a guarantee about your particular site, and a site can be reachable yet broken for visitors because of an error on a page. Uptime monitoring tools check the site from outside at regular intervals and alert you when it stops responding. Why it matters: Outages cost you leads and trust, and an independent monitor tells you before a customer does.
