GLOSSARY

What is Bandwidth?

DEFINITION

Bandwidth is the amount of data your website sends to visitors over a period of time, often measured per month. Every page view transfers the page, images, scripts and fonts, so heavy images and busy traffic use more.

Some hosting plans cap bandwidth or charge for going over, and others call it unlimited with fair-use limits in the small print. Do not confuse it with speed: bandwidth in this sense is a volume allowance, while loading speed depends on how efficient the site is and how quickly the server responds. Why it matters: A traffic spike or oversized images can hit a plan limit and slow or suspend your site at the worst moment.
