GLOSSARY

What is CMS?

DEFINITION

A CMS is software that lets you create and edit website content without writing code. WordPress is the best known, and Shopify plays the same role for online stores.

The CMS stores your text, images and pages in a database and builds each page when a visitor asks for it. You log in to an admin area to change things. The CMS is not your design or your host: you can usually change the theme or move to a new host while keeping the same content. Keeping the CMS and its add-ons updated is part of keeping the site secure. Why it matters: It is how you and your team update the site day to day, and outdated CMS software is a leading cause of hacks.
