GLOSSARY

What is crawling?

DEFINITION

Crawling is when a search engine's automated program downloads a web page. It finds pages mainly by following links, reading sitemaps and revisiting known pages.

Google's crawler is called Googlebot. Crawling does not mean a page will be indexed or shown, and pages blocked by robots.txt or hidden behind a login are not crawled.
