GLOSSARY

What is Theme?

DEFINITION

A theme controls how a WordPress site looks: layout, fonts, colors and the structure of pages and menus. Your content stays in the database while the theme decides how to display it, which is why you can switch themes without retyping everything, though the result will need checking.

Page builders such as Elementor work alongside the theme to give you more control over layout. A theme is different from a plugin: the theme is about appearance and templates, while plugins add functions. Customizations made inside a theme can be lost if the theme is replaced or updated carelessly. Why it matters: Design changes and mobile layout problems usually involve the theme, so knowing which is in use helps pin down requests.
