GLOSSARY

What is 301 redirect?

DEFINITION

A 301 redirect is a permanent, server-side instruction that sends visitors and search engines from an old address to a new one. It tells Google the new address should be treated as the canonical one.

Google also treats 308 as permanent. Temporary redirects such as 302 and 307 do not signal a canonical change, so they are the wrong choice for a permanent move.
