GLOSSARY

What is heuristic evaluation?

DEFINITION

A heuristic evaluation is an expert inspection of a page against recognised usability principles, such as Nielsen’s 10 heuristics. Three to five reviewers each judge it independently, then compare notes.

It is a fast, cheap way to find likely problems. Nielsen Norman Group’s own guidance is that it cannot replace research with real users.
