GLOSSARY

What is DMARC?

DEFINITION

DMARC is a DNS record that tells receiving mail servers what to do with messages claiming to be from your domain that fail SPF or DKIM checks. It builds on those two and does not replace them.

A message passes if SPF or DKIM passes and matches the domain in the visible From address. You choose a policy: none delivers the message and sends you reports, quarantine sends it to spam, and reject refuses it. Google recommends starting with none to see your mail flow, then tightening once everything legitimate is passing. Why it matters: It is your main defense against someone sending convincing fake emails in your company's name, and it is increasingly expected by large mailbox providers.
