GLOSSARY

What is Domain?

DEFINITION

A domain is the web address people type to reach you, such as yourcompany.com. You do not own it forever: you register it for a set period, usually one year at a time, through a company called a registrar, and you must renew it to keep it.

A domain is not the same as a website or hosting. The domain is the name, hosting is where the files live, and DNS is the system that connects the two. If the domain lapses, your site and your email addresses stop working. Why it matters: Losing a domain means losing your website and your email at once, so you need to know who registered it and when it renews.
