GLOSSARY

What is positioning?

DEFINITION

Positioning is the decision about who a business is for and why it is the better choice compared with the alternatives. It is made inside the business and then repeated until buyers repeat it back.

Al Ries and Jack Trout popularised the term in 1981, and April Dunford’s 2019 book Obviously Awesome offers a step-by-step method. Good positioning names the alternatives, the unique attributes, the value, the best-fit customer and the market category.
