GLOSSARY

What is Phishing?

DEFINITION

Phishing is an attempt to trick you into giving away a password, payment details or access, usually by pretending to be someone you trust. It arrives as email, text messages or calls, and often looks like a message from a bank, a delivery firm, your hosting company or a colleague.

Warning signs include urgency, an unexpected request, a mismatched sender address and a link whose real destination differs from its label. Do not click, type your password into the page, or reply. Go to the service by typing its address yourself. Webtec never asks for your passwords. Why it matters: Stolen logins are how most business sites and email accounts get compromised, and it starts with one convincing message.
